Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducted its first category-based Express Entry draw on June 30. The draw invited many applicants from the healthcare and STEM sectors. Most Express Entry occupations eligible for immigration are related to healthcare or STEM workers. Several categories are extensively influenced by the candidate’s professional background, work experience, and whether their occupation is in demand in Canada.
More healthcare and STEM worker will receive invitations in the upcoming months as Canada desperately needs workers from these domains. In addition, the IRCC plans to conduct its first batch of category-based lotteries for STEM professionals in the following week.

IRCC had selected new categories based on labor market assessment, including projections and feedback from stakeholders nationwide.
The immigration department used this information to develop six new categories for Express Entry in the upcoming draws in the coming months. These classifications intended to boost Canada’s position as an immigration destination and encourage more French-speaking nationals to settle in Canada (Outside of Quebec).
The new categories are listed below:
All these occupations mentioned above will continue to experience tremendous demand in Canada. However, STEM and healthcare will dominate all of them for the rest of 2023 and beyond.
Canada’s low birth rate and aging population add to the population decline. It’d surprise you that there are more elders than children under 14 in Canada. The number of people over 65 is expected to reach nine million by the end of 2030. Canadians don’t have as many children, so Canada’s population has older than younger populations. As more and more people retire, the burden on Canada’s healthcare system will increase the demand for healthcare workers. The healthcare industry will see the most job vacancy rate as more seniors need aged care.
Inviting foreign applicants with considerable experience, skills, and knowledge in the healthcare industry will reduce the mounting pressure on an already overburdened system.
Doctors and registered nurses will be in high demand in Canada. But dozens of other occupations in the healthcare sector will experience demand in the coming years. Here are some careers that fall within this category:
Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) jobs are the most in-demand jobs in Canada. It is estimated that many new jobs and career options will emerge from this field in the country as more and more businesses go digital and look for innovative ways to boost their operations.
Over 5,000 startups have established their roots in Canadian cities such as Ontario, Waterloo, Vancouver, and Montreal in the past five years. Canada has become a thriving center for tech innovation and growth. Moreover, Canada is also a hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) with over 1 032 machine learning companies. A report by Invest in Canada states that the country sits in the fourth position in global competitiveness in AI implementation, innovation, and investment.
The category-based selection draws target the following STEM occupations.
The STEM above fields are considered in demand and critical to the Canadian economy and labor market.
