The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) welcomes foreign skilled workers to live and work as permanent residents in Canada’s smaller communities, which are facing extreme workforce shortages. This program is driven by the participating communities, which select foreign talent to fill local labor market requirements. Claresholm in Alberta is the most recent addition to the list of communities that are actively accepting applications under this pathway.

Each community has distinct additional eligibility requirements, and different procedures for job search and applying for recommendation. A community recommends applicants for permanent residence to IRCC based on the candidate’s potential to satisfy local economic needs, scope of employment, and intention of living in the community.

Claresholm – a town in Southern Alberta – is the most recent community to join the Pilot. Alberta is a popular choice amongst Canada immigration aspirants – owing to the range of employment opportunities, low cost of living, affordable housing and diverse population. Claresholm is a 1.5 hour drive away from Calgary – the most culturally vibrant city of Alberta. In 2020, this town will recommend up to 20 skilled workers and their families for permanent residence. They will be invited to live in Stavely, Granum, and some parts of Willow Creek.
To apply for recommendation to Claresholm, aspirants – who can meet federal criteria related to language proficiency, work experience, academic qualifications, and settlement funds – must create an online profile in the Claresholm RNIP Employment Portal. Here, they can upload their resume, supporting documents, and cover letter.
Subsequently, they can apply for the jobs listed on the portal. They can submit applications for three jobs at a time. If the candidate receives a job offer, Claresholm may recommend them to IRCC. While the application is being processed, the applicant can apply for a work permit to travel to Canada and commence the job.
After arriving in Canada through the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, newcomers are connected to settlement services, and offered opportunities to be mentored by established members within the community. Thus, support is provided to integrate the immigrant not only within the local workforce, but also into the culture of the area where they choose to settle.
