Australia conducted the largest SkillSelect Invitation Round ever on December 8, 2022, inviting a record-breaking 35,120 applicants to apply for Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189 and Subclass 491 visas.

Applicants for the Subclass 189 visa alone got 35,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for this visa. Learn more about this large invitation round undertaken by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

Limits on Occupations for Invitation Rounds

Invitations granted under the independent and skilled regional (provisional) visas may have an 'occupation ceiling' applied to them. This means that there will be a fair upper limit on the number of Expressions of Interest for skilled migration from a given profession group. This guarantees that the skilled migration program remains balanced and that intended migrants from a wide range of skilled occupations are invited.

The occupation ceiling values are calculated as a percentage of the occupation's stock employment data. The Australian Bureau of Statistics provides employment numbers that show the number of individuals engaged in each occupation in Australia. State or Territory Nominated or Business Innovation and Investment visa subclasses do not have occupation ceilings.

Current Invitation Round

The point score requirement was the lowest, with only 65 points required in the 8 December round. Let's find out the round's major highlights:

  • The Australian government has issued a total of 35,120 ITAs in this round.
  • Subclass 189 visa applicants received 35,120 ITAs on their own (Invitations to Apply).
  • 120 Subclass 491 visa applicants were issued invitations.

Individuals with the highest point totals are invited to apply for the relevant visa. Those with equal points scores have their order of invitation determined by the moment they reached their points score for that subclass (referred to as the date of effect). Expressions of Interest with earlier effective dates are encouraged before later dates.
